Are You Good With Your
Hands?
by President Girlie Teotico, RC Boracay
The
Acupressure and Therapeutic Massage Livelihood Training Seminar for the
Mothers of Yapak was held las July 25 to 27, 2007 at the Ecovillage Resort
and Training Center. This project was made possible by a grant through the
Partners in Service Program of sister club, Rotary Club of Makati.
Why acupressure and therapeutic massage? As a livelihood program, this
skill requires minimum capital and could
be learned quite easily. All you need is a pair of hands and
concentration. This grant was used to enable 20 mothers and their
representatives to learn the art of acupressure and therapeutic massage
under the tutelage of Mr. Dante Tiosan over the period of three days.
Mr. Dante Tiosan is the founder of
the Visually Impaired Brotherhood for Excellent Services (VIBES), a self
help group of visually impaired individuals who have overcome their
disability to be able to become productive members of society. With over
20 years of experience and with over 30 branches of VIBES nationwide, Mr.
Tiosan shared many of his insights and learnings to our mothers how to
treat the patient, how to be able to
keep customers coming back, how to establish yourself as a masseuse in the
community.
Lectures were followed by hands on techniques for the back, the head,
neck, shoulders and extremities, with the students practicing their new
skills on each other.
As a culminating activity, 20 volunteer models came as their first
customers. Graduation ceremonies to honor the mothers followed.
As part of the clubs effort to provide these graduates with
a venue to earn more income, their names and contact numbers will
be sent to most of the resorts acknowledging them as having completed
their training. Practice clinics will also be set up through out the year
to ensure that the quality of their massage continues to improve with
time.
