ZONE 7B, PHILIPPINES

RRIMC MESSAGE – SEPTEMBER 2007

 PDG DAVID “DAVE” M. VILLANUEVA

Regional RI Membership Coordinator (RRIMC), Zone 7B, RY 2006-2008

Greetings!  The month of September is celebrated in our Rotary calendar as the New Generations Month (Youth Activities Month for “old” Rotarians).  It is the best time to evaluate how our Districts and Clubs are helping the New Generations in our respective communities.  Rotary has many avenues of Youth Service:  Interact, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), Rotaract and Youth Exchange (Rotex).  It is during this time that our Clubs are challenged to organize new and/or reactivate existing Interact and/or Rotaract Clubs.  With respect to membership, New Generations Month is the appropriate time for our Clubs to review the database of their Rotaract and Interact Clubs and identify those members who are qualified to become Rotarians.    As pointed out by RI Pres. Wilf, we share a gift, “the wonderful, amazing force that is Rotary”, when we invite these qualified young alumni to join our Rotary Clubs.

In the recruitment of potential new members, we should target the alumni of our Rotary (both RI and TRF) programs. In them, we have a ready “just-waiting-to-be-invited” pool of high-caliber young persons who are familiar with Rotary’s work and interested in Rotary’s objectives, who are willing to return or “give back” Rotary’s investment on them.  However, we have to act fast in recruiting them, as their interest in joining Rotary decreases over time (A survey shows that 72% are willing to join after having participated in the programs for 1-3 years; 30% after 20 years).

Thus, we should take the following recommended steps in order to help more RI and/or TRF program alumni in becoming more Rotarians:

  • Start / Maintain our TRF and RI alumni databases

  • Keep contact with our alumni after the program

  • Involve our alumni in projects and activities

  • Invite our alumni to District and / or Club meeting and events

  • Send Rotary-specific newsletters to our alumni

  • Connect our alumni with our existing or new Clubs

In this regard, the 2007 Council on Legislation gave importance to our alumni by approving the following enactments:

  1. to exempt recent Rotaractors (within the preceding 2 years) from paying an admission fee;

  2. to allow TRF alumni to be active members; and

  3. to allow Clubs to elect TRF alumni into active membership even if the alumnus’ classification is filled.

Thus, for RY 2007-08, let us share Rotary by bringing in new members, particularly our alumni!”  Rotary Shares!  Let us Share Rotary by encouraging every Rotarian in Zone 7B to bring in a new member this year and every year!
